Canberra ist die Hauptstadt von Australien. Bis 1927
war Melbourne die Zentrale des 1900 etablierten ‚Commonwealth of Australia‘. Ein weltweit ausgeschriebener Wettbewerb für den Plan der neuen Hauptstadt wurde durch die amerikanische Firma Walter
Burley Griffin gewonnen. Nach Griffin sollte die Stadt an einem Stausee liegen und viele Gartenanlagen haben. Beidseitig vom See liegt die Stadt seit 1927 mit den drei Hauptmerkmalen: Das
Parlament, das Denkmal an die Opfer der Weltkriege und das Denkmal an Kaptain James Cook.
